Mission Statement

The mission of Campus Police is to enhance the safety of the members of the ASUN community and the security of all of the campus’ facilities.

The Department enforces institutional policies and municipal and state laws in support of the academic mission. Providing professional safety and security services to the academic community, through visibility and education while promoting personal responsibility.  Educating the ASUN community on safety and security issues, is one of the department’s most important responsibilities.

For an on-campus emergency, call 7866.  If calling from a mobile phone call 870-512-7866.   If on the Jonesboro or Marked Tree campuses you should call 9-1-1.

About Us

The Campus Police Department provides a safe, secure environment that will maximize educational growth and development of its students and foster productive cooperation among its constituents.  Other populace we serve are faculty, staff, and visitors. The Campus Police Department, composed of two certified police officers, enforces federal, state and local laws in its jurisdiction. The enforcement of these laws is tempered with an educational philosophy which supports the mission, goals, and objectives of the institution.

Never walk alone at night if at all possible. If you absolutely have to walk alone, walk on well-lit walkways and plan your route ahead of time. It is best to walk facing traffic. Ask for assistance from the Campus Police Department if you are frightened or concerned.

The Arkansas State University Newport Department of Safety is committed to providing a safe and secure environment, for all students, faculty, staff, administration and visitors.  This Annual Security Report will assist in providing information to assess your safety and security from “all hazards” perspective, to include personal violence and crime.  ASUN Department of Safety is the primary department responsible for the safety of all ASUN community members for all three campuses.

This report will provide information on the safety and security of each ASUN campus to include Jonesboro, Marked Tree and Newport.   This report contains information on the policies and procedures for reporting crimes, safety and security prevention programs and victim’s assistance resources; and other material to help in providing for your safety and security.   This report is provided in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act), and the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA).  In addition this report contains information in compliance of the new requirements under the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013, Campus SaVE Act, and Title IX.

School Messenger is ASU-Newport’s (ASUN) emergency notification system that allows college officials to send news, alerts and instructions simultaneously to the ASUN community using landline phones, text messaging, e-mail and voice messages.   This notification system provides the college an immediate way to notify individuals through multiple points of contact.

All students are automatically enrolled in the School Messenger notification system upon enrolling for courses.  Faculty, staff and adjuncts are automatically enrolled in the School Messenger system.   Students may request to be taken out of the School Messenger service by updating their demographic information in Campus Connect.

Steps to opt out of School Messenger:

  1. Login to the ASUN Portal.
  2. Click on Campus Connect.
  3. Click continue to acknowledge you have read the payment information.
  4. Click the demographic information to update.
  5. Select the Allow ASU-Newport to send text messages to your mobile phone number as Y or N.
